The double family house built in 1994 with its distinctive barrel roof, the strict design with at the same time well thought-out room geometries was carefully transformed into a modern residential house, taking into account the needs of the new owners and the existing materials. The maxim was: less is more. The staircase, which provides access to all four floors, reveals a strong presence, especially in the loft-like dining area that extends to the upper floor. In contrast to the original staircase banister made of wire ropes and glass panels, proportioned wooden slats now define the entire height of the room, taking up the symmetry of the architecture and allowing an exciting play of shadows by the incoming light.
Like a common thread, the wooden slats are repeated at specific points in the house, for example as connecting elements of the two exposed concrete panels, which merge in the same material to form a custom-made storage element. The simple bulthaup kitchen matches this, opening up to the dining area as a cooking workshop. Upstairs, in the new bathroom, a dark-painted wall together with the existing translucent glass block wall sets accents, and in the sleeping area a wardrobe element with integrated sliding door connects the two rooms.
